A pair of Romanians will battle it out in the second round of the Iasi Open when Elena Ruse and Jaqueline Cristian hit the court on Tuesday. Feeling right at home in this WTA250 event, Jaqueline Cristian will play the role of favorite against Ruse with a spot in the quarterfinals at stake.
At -135, you can grab Cristian to win this match and advance but EJ Garr’s Elena Ruse vs Jaqueline Cristian prediction features odds at +150 which you can find below.
Elena Gabriela Ruse is ranked 147th in the world and struggled slightly with her first-round opponent, 198th-ranked Anastasia Tikhonova. The Romanian was stretched to 3-sets and either player could serve to save grace!
Jaqueline Cristian cruised to a straight-sets win in her opening-round clash against 251st-ranked Nuria Brancaccio, although Ruse is 2 – 0 on this surface against her!

These two teammates are among the best tennis players in Romania now that Simona Halep isn’t a major entity on the WTA tour. Simona made her presence felt for a few minutes this season but now it is time for Ruse and Cristian to carry the torch.
Can they do it, is the next big question. Ranked 61st in the world, Jaqueline Cristian is the second-highest-ranked Romanian on the WTA tour behind Sorana Cirstea (37), and Ruse is slotted at 147th. There is your update on Romanian tennis so let’s move on to the match.
I am betting that Ruse will make life difficult for Cirstea today, and I don’t expect this to be a walk in the park for the favorite today. I was contemplating the potential for the upset with Ruse at +115 but all I can envision is a 3-set match between two Romanians desperate for a win on Romanian soil.
Gabriela Ruse didn’t look impressive in her first-round affair until the third set which she won emphatically, 6 – 1. Being in that position against Tikhonova might be cause for concern but this is a big match in Romania today.
Ruse was extremely thankful to the Iasi crowd after her win, although it wasn’t close to a packed house. Today we might see a few more locals in the crowd being a heads-up affair with Ruse and Cristian on the same court.
I like that Ruse is 2 – 0 against Cristian on clay, including the win at the 2023 French Open, and it will help her win at least a set today against Cristian. We’re going the distance in this clash and Pinnacle offers a +150 price on the action!
Gabby Ruse is 14 – 6 on clay this year, and it has been three years since her last and only clay title (2021 Hamburg).
Ruse went 3 – 2 on the grass after three qualifying wins at the London Major but she ran into Rybakina who ousted her out of the main draw in straight sets.
Over the last three years, Ruse has been going backward in the rankings. In 2021, Ruse reached as high as 87th in the world, but the decline landed her at 117th (22) and 128th (23) and is now 147th.
Cristian is 14 – 8 on the clay this season and has a 22 – 21 record for the campaign.
Jaqueline has two clay titles from last season at the ITF level and seemingly brushed off the embarrassing loss to Qinwen Zheng in Palermo at 1 & 1 in straight sets.
Cristian has reached a personal best of 61st in the world this year, but to keep that status a loss as a favorite today could be extremely detrimental.
Fellow Romanians Elena Gabriela Ruse and Jaqueline Cristian have met three times on tour since 2020, two of which occurred on clay as mentioned above.
In July 2020, Ruse and Cristian met in the semifinals at Turneu here in Romania, and Ruse advanced to the final with a 3-set victory and then lost in the final.
In 2020 at a WTA25 event in Istanbul on a hardcourt, Cristian swept Ruse out of the quarterfinals in straight sets.
Last year at the French Major, Ruse took a 2 – 1 lead in the series over Cristian after a quarterfinal win in Paris in straight sets.
The winner of this match will face either Elina Avanesyan or Petra Martic in the quarterfinals of the Iasi Open.
