A cracking day of action on Friday, with the start of the two-day Coral Eclipse meeting very much the highlight at Sandown. Clerk of the course Andrew Cooper has been watering to try and keep the jar out the ground after a very dry few weeks in the area, and he will be hoping that field sizes stand up better than has sometimes been the case this summer at the Grade 1 track. There are three valuable listed prizes on the card, with the Coral Marathon at 2.20pm sure to attract some upwardly mobile stayers over the two mile trip. Elsewhere there are competitive cards at Beverley, Doncaster and Haydock, while NH fans will flock down to Newton Abbot.

Andrew Balding’s stayer posted a career best effort when winning at the Royal meeting 17 days ago, showing a terrific attitude under pressure to see things out having travelled strongly on the bridle throughout on the fast ground. He steps up in class to listed company at Sandown on Friday, but remains with potential to improve further after just six runs on turf (four wins), and a positive ride is on the cards from Rob Hornby dropping back to two miles.

A mark go 78 may well underestimate his potential to improve after just three career starts, and he impressed when winning a warm Salisbury novice contest 24 days ago under a confident ride.
