There are six meetings in Britain and Ireland on Thursday, with competitive and varied flat racing keeping bookmakers and punters busy throughout the afternoon and evening. Ayr, Chelmsford, Naas, Newcastle, Pontefract and Yarmouth put on interesting cards, with perhaps the Racing League fixture starting at 5.15pm likely to attract the bulk of the betting interest given the excellent prize money on offer.

Ralph Beckett would not be the most regular visitor to Pontefract, and it looks significant that he has brought up his progressive 2-y-o for this class 5 novice stakes. He shaped well on debut at Salusbury in August, and improved on that run from the front at Wolverhampton last time out (picked off by Andrew Balding’s unexposed Syndicated late on). This much stiffer track should suit ideally (will get a mile in time), and a positive ride from Hector Crouch can see him get off the mark at the third attempt.

Katie Scott’s handicapper is very reliable in his grade, winning 6 of his 20 career starts, and he caught the eye last time out at Haydock when ridden negatively from rear in a small field. He ran really well at this track back in July (just denied having raced with zest in the lead over 1m2f), and seems sure to go close here with ground conditions to suit.
