Saturday’s ITV action has something for all fans of the sport, with all-weather flat racing from Newcastle complimented by some cracking soft ground jumping from Aintree and Wincanton. The November handicap at 1.30pm is likely to be the big betting race of the afternoon, with the prestigious prize re-routed from Doncaster as that track was deemed waterlogged earlier in the week. Over at Liverpool, there is the first sighter of the Grand National fences this season, with the Grand Sefton at 2.45pm sure to be gruelling and demanding contest in the heavy conditions.
In this article:
Captain Conby
Wincanton 1:50 (UK time)
Edward Sheehy’s Fry’s useful novice has made a smooth transition to jumping this winter, and ran with real credit in defeat when second to the classy Sharjah at Tipperary last time out. The better ground likely at Wincanton is expected to suit, and a positive ride to use his high cruising speed would be a good plan of attack around this speed track.
Odds: NA
Brad The Brief
Newcastle 2:05 (UK time)
Hugo Palmer’s classy 6-y-o has proved hard to place all season, but he has run well in warm company and could be just the type to enjoy a profitable winter on the all-weather. He caught the eye on one previous visit to Newcastle in July, racing too freely but still bang there at the furlong pole, and this listed contest does represent his easiest assignment for a very long time.
Odds: NA

Time (UK) | Track | Horse | Analysis |
---|---|---|---|
1:15 | Wincanton | Another Crick | Noel Williams veteran seems sure to be fully fit for this first start in 194 days, and the drying ground conditions expected at this sharp right-handed track should suit ideally under the excellent Jack Hogan. |
1:30 | Newcastle | Sound Angela | Roger Varian’s useful filly has proved hard to place this season, but she has run with credit in defeat in warm company on three occasions and this listed prize looks an excellent opening under David Egan. |
1:50 | Wincanton | Captain Conby | Edward Sheehy’s Fry’s useful novice has made a smooth transition to jumping this winter, and ran with real credit in defeat when second to the classy Sharjah at Tipperary last time out. The better ground likely at Wincanton is expected to suit, and a positive ride to use his high cruising speed would be a good plan of attack around this speed track. |
2:05 | Newcastle | Brad The Brief | Hugo Palmer’s classy 6-y-o has proved hard to place all season, but he has run well in warm company and could be just the type to enjoy a profitable winter on the all-weather. He caught the eye on one previous visit to Newcastle in July, racing too freely but still bang there at the furlong pole, and this listed contest does represent his easiest assignment for a very long time. |
2:25 | Wincanton | The Big Breakaway | Joe Tizzard’s frustrating chaser has never been the easiest to catch right, often spoiling his chance with a jumping error at a crucial stage, but he could be worth chancing fresh with the yard in blistering form (five winners in the last fortnight at a 20pc strike rate). |
2:45 | Aintree | Born By The Sea | Paul Gilligan’s handicapper is fully primed after four runs already this season, and that fitness-edge could be crucial over these demanding fences. He has won just 2 from 24 over the larger obstacles, but has often been highly tried in hot company in Ireland, and he ran well here in the 2022 Grand National behind Corach Rambler (finishing on the heels of the principals in a cracking sixth). |
3:00 | Wincanton | Rubaud | Paul Nicholls has a fantastic strike rate at this his local track, and his progressive young hurdler looked one to keep on side of when returning with a win from the front at Kempton in October. He is now 5 from 8 over hurdles since arriving from France, and will soon have these rivals out of their comfort zone if breezing along in the lead under Harry Cobden. |
3:20 | Aintree | West Balboa | Dan Skelton’s hurdler looks one to follow into Graded company this winter, and this 2m4f contest should be the perfect starting point at Aintree on Saturday. He thrived into handicaps last season, winning 3 from 5 over timber, and impressed when winning here in a 22 runner field in April (heavily backed 9/2f and ridden with supreme confidence from last to first). |
3:32 | Wincanton | Ilovethenightlife | Joe Tizzard’s mare improved run to run over hurdles last season, winning 3 from 7 over timber and shaping better than the bare result in listed company when last seen out at Cheltenham in April. This flatter track on decent ground should be much more suitable now handicapping (freegoing sort), and fitness is unlikely to be an issue with the yard in terrific form in recent weeks. |
3:45 | Newcastle | Chillingham | James Bethell’s handicapper returns to the fray fresh after 78 days off the track, and he shaped a lot better than the bare result when last seen out at Hamilton in August (did not settle in a small field and just tired up the final hill). |
