Saturday’s ITV racing has a nine race bonanza for punters to get stuck into, with the best of the action from Newmarket and York covered as the turf flat season begins to draw to a close. There are some top class Group races on a compelling card at HQ, with the Dewhurst Stakes at 2.00pm very much the highlight over seven furlongs. York stages a typically competitive card, with some huge fields assured in the handicaps for the excellent prize money on offer.
In this article:
Satrlore
York 1:15 (UK time)
Sir Michael Stoute’s unexposed performer looked a really smart prospect to follow when winning at Sandown on his debut, and shaped a good deal better than the bare result under a penalty there last time out (doing too much too soon and fading in the last 100 yards). He remains with loads of scope to do a good deal better with more racing experience, and his freshness at this late stage of the turf season should be a big positive under Richard Kingscote.
Odds: NA
Knight
Newmarket 3:50 (UK time)
Simon and Ed Crisford’s useful performer has won 2 of his 6 career starts so far, and posted a career best effort when just denied by the prolific Chindit in a warm listed contest at Sandown last time out. He looks sure to be suited by the slight step up in trip to 1m1f at this flat track on better ground, and can swoop late under regular rider James Doyle.
Odds: NA

Time (UK) | Track | Horse | Analysis |
---|---|---|---|
1:15 | York | Starlore | Sir Michael Stoute’s unexposed performer looked a really smart prospect to follow when winning at Sandown on his debut, and shaped a good deal better than the bare result under a penalty there last time out (doing too much too soon and fading in the last 100 yards). He remains with loads of scope to do a good deal better with more racing experience, and his freshness at this late stage of the turf season should be a big positive under Richard Kingscote. |
1:25 | Newmarket | Ambiente Friendly | James Fanshawe would not be known for first time out winners, and it looked significant that his 2-y-o colt was able to rout his rivals from the front at Leicester last month (landing market support in the process). He now steps right up in class to Group 3 company at Newmarket on Saturday under Tom Marquand, but has plenty of scope to do better and handles cut in the ground well if the forecast rain arrives to ease conditions. |
2:00 | Newmarket | Iberian | Charlie Hills juvenile has created a deep impression in winning two of his three career starts to date, showing a smart turn of foot having travelled strongly at Newbury and Doncaster. He revelled oon soft ground under a confident ride last time out, and there should be plenty more improvement in the tank as he tackles Group 1 company for the first time under Tom Marquand. |
2:25 | York | Apollo One | This consistent handicapper has been inching up the weights without winning this summer, but he always gives his running and has optimum conditions to go close at York on Saturday. He ran a cracker when third at Beverley last time out in a valuable listed prize (arguably too close to a strong pace and fading in the last 100 yards), and this return to handicaps at a flat track should be ideal under Richard Kingscote. |
2:40 | Newmarket | Wordsworth | David Pipe’s expensive arrival from Ireland made a smooth transition to hurdling at Bangor 10 days ago (making all with zest), and can make a profitable switch back to the flat and land this prestigious staying handicap. He has plenty of classy form in the book in his younger days for Aidan O’Brien (before becoming impossible to place), and an attacking front-running ride in this big field is on the cards. |
3:05 | Newmarket | Align The Stars | Charlie Johnston’s juvenile has run to a fair level in defeat in two career starts so far, and he can put that experience to good use under a positive front-running ride from the excellent Jason Hart. |
3:15 | Newmarket | Arabian Crown | Charlie Appleby has maintained a fantastic strike rate throughout the season, and his 2-y-o seems sure to progress further now his stamina is drawn out over this 1m2f trip. He impressed over a mile at Salisbury last time out in a very strong listed contest, finding strongly for pressure under a positive ride, and is well worth his place in this Group 3 prize under William Buick. |
3:35 | York | Obelix | John and Thady Gosden’s unexposed handicapper (just 6 runs on turf so far) sunk in heavy ground when disappointing at Doncaster last time out, but he had been progressing well previously (good fifth at this track in August). He will relish the better ground expected on the Knavesmire on Saturday, and his proven stamina should count for plenty under Kieran Shoemark in what is bound to be a strongly run race. |
3:50 | Newmarket | Knight | Simon and Ed Crisford’s useful performer has won 2 of his 6 career starts so far, and posted a career best effort when just denied by the prolific Chindit in a warm listed contest at Sandown last time out. He looks sure to be suited by the slight step up in trip to 1m1f at this flat track on better ground, and can swoop late under regular rider James Doyle. |
