Today’s Racing Tips – August 19th

Saturday’s ITV cameras focus on a cracking card at Newbury, with two Group races and some ultra competitive handicaps on a valuable card. Drying summer ground is likely across the country after the weather has finally improved in the past week, and punters will be grateful if underfoot conditions stay on the faster side over the next couple of months (with the form likely to work out).

Charlie Appleby’s useful performer showed a tenacious attitude under pressure to deny Outbox at Newmarket last month in a valuable listed prize, and he can handle a slight jump up in class to Group 3 company at Newbury on Saturday. He has won 3 of his 15 career starts so far, and a positive front-running ride from William Buick should make him very hard to pass on drying ground that suits ideally.

Rod Millman has his team in terrific form at the moment, and his six-time winner had been in terrific form until a shade disappointing on soft ground at Ffos Las last time out (well backed 13/8f but just faded in the final 100 yards). He has much more suitable conditions in this Class 3 contest, and the booking of Oisin Murphy is a big positive to his chances.

2:05	Newmarket	Divine Libra	Charlie Hills has a particularly strong hand in the sprint division this season, and his consistent handicapper looked an unlucky loser when finishing strongly into third over this course and distance last time out.

2:40	Ripon	Thornaby Pearl	Adrian Nicholls sprinter comes into this valuable handicap relatively fresh after just three runs so far this summer, and his course and distance win in July was very impressive (having been heavily backed beforehand down to to 13/8f). Heavy ground proved too much last time out at Nottingham, but the quickening conditions should be ideal back at Ripon and a huge field/strong pace will set things up perfectly for a late charge..
3:00	Newbury	Bless Him	David Simcock’s handicapper has hinted he is poised to strike on a couple of occasions this summer, and he could be worth chancing at a big price under regular rider Jamie Spencer. He is always ridden with exaggerated waiting tactics from well off the pace and needs the cards to fall right, but is well treated on his best form and the fast pace on quickening ground would be his optimum conditions.
3:15	Ripon	Twelth Knight	Paul Midgeley has hit form of late with 4 winners in the last fortnight (after a very quiet few months), and this 4-y-o shaped really well on his final run for Ruth Carr in a muddling small field last time out at this track (parked widest throughout and just fading in the last 50 yards). A bigger field on much faster ground should be ideal, and there could be some improvement in the tank now for this new astute yard.
3:35	Newbury	New Endevaour	Roger Varian’s progressive 3-y-o has won 2of his 9 career starts, always highly tried in top handicap company, and lost no caste in defeat when third behind the high class Nostrum at Newmarket in July. He has been kept fresh since (avoiding the soft ground that prevailed for a few weeks), and the return to 7f on rapidly drying ground should be ideal under the excellent Tom Marquand.
