Today’s Racing Tips – February 4th

There are 8 races covered live on ITV on Saturday, with the pick of the jumps action from Musselburgh, Sandown and Wetherby. High class handicaps are very much the order of the day, with easy ground and decent prize money sure to attract big fields and competitive racing. The Edinburgh National at 3.13pm is a thorough stamina test over nearly four miles, with some of the big southern yards sure to be drawn up to Scotland for this valuable 0-150 contest.

Today’s Daily Nap

Dolos

Sandown 1:45 (UK time)

Paul Nicholls Sandown specialist won this race in 2022, and has run well in defeat on all three occasions this season. He will appreciate the drying ground conditions back at Sandown on Saturday, and a positive ride is on the cards from the red-hot Harry Cobden.

Odds: NA

Today’s Value Angle

Castle Robin

Sandown 3:30 (UK time)

Charlie Longsden has enjoyed his best winter for many years, and his stayer is worth forgiving a lesser effort at Cheltenham in November (bounced turned out too quickly second run back after an absence). He ran really well over 3m2f at Kelso in October on his return, and remans with upside over fences after just 7 career starts (with the drying ground conditions at Sandown expected to suit ideally).

Odds: NA

Odds are best odds available as at 2am February 4th 2023. Odds may now differ.

Time (UK)TrackHorseAnalysis
1:28MusselburghCyclopDavid Dennis’s battle-hardened 12-y-o has been running well in victory and defeat all winter over fences. This sharp track suits frontrunners, and the excellent Theo Gillard is likely to gun him from the tape and make all the running on the drying ground.

2:03MusselburghFlower of ScotlandSandy Thomson’s stayer showed an extreme test of stamina really suited when winning the Scottish Borders National at Kelso in December, value for more there as he overcame trouble in running from miles off the pace. He will need a more positive ride at this sharper track, but Danny McMenamin knows his quirks well and he can defy a career high mark.
2:20SandownMonmiralPaul Nicholls classy performer has bumped into Jonbon and The Real Whacker in two runs over fences so far this winter, and he has impressed with his sound jumping on each occasion. That could be a really big asset over these demanding fences, and a positive ride from the front from Cobden would make him extremely hard to pass up the stamina sapping final hill.
2:40WetherbyBallygrifin CottageDan Skelton’s 8-y-o made a really taking chase debut in a small field at Haydock in November, jumping superbly as the first attempt in soft ground, and this looks a weak Grade 2 to continue his progress towards a tilt at the Cheltenham Festival.
2:55SandownRemasteredDavid Pipe’s versatile and consistent stayer has been in terrific form all winter (like so many from the yard), and he has optimum conditions again back over timber here under regular rider Tom Scudamore.
3:16MusselburghNayattiDonald McCain’s useful performer has an excellent strike rate over hurdles, winning 8 of his 24 career starts, and he showed this course and distance suited ideally when winning impressively here on New Years Day. A new mark demands more, but Hughes is booked again, and his smart turn of foot should be seen to maximum effect in what is sure to be a strongly run handicap.
