Saturday’s ITV coverage features some competitive jumps action from Kempton and Newcastle, alongside the Winter Derby meeting on the all-weather at Southwell. The big betting race of the afternoon is likely to be the Eider Chase at 2.08pm, with an extreme test of stamina assured over the sapping 4m1f trip and excellent prize money on offer. There are some cracking novices on show at the Sunbury venue too, with perhaps some late Cheltenham Festival clues on offer among the three Grade 2’s on a high quality card.
In this article:
Givemefive
Kempton 1:50 (UK time)
Harry Derham has enjoyed a breakthrough season with some cracking young novices in the yard, and his unbeaten juvenile is fancied to handle the jump up in class to Grade 2 company at Kempton on Saturday. He has impressed in landing market confidence at Market Rasen and Warwick so far, and this test of speed on eased decent ground should suit ideally under the vastly improved Paul O’Brien.
Odds: 4.00
Blow Your Wad
Kempton 2:27 (UK time)
Tom Lacey’s scopey novice has already shown in December that this course and distance suited him, and he had excuses for a lesser effort behind the prolific frontrunner Ginnys Destiny at Cheltenham last time out. He remains open to more improvement after just three runs over fences, and this does look a pretty weak Grade 2 for the money on offer, with regular rider Stan Sheppard back in the plate.
Odds: 5.00

1:50 | Kempton | Givemefive | Harry Derham has enjoyed a breakthrough season with some cracking young novices in the yard, and his unbeaten juvenile is fancied to handle the jump up in class to Grade 2 company at Kempton on Saturday. He has impressed in landing market confidence at Market Rasen and Warwick so far, and this test of speed on eased decent ground should suit ideally under the vastly improved Paul O’Brien. |
2:08 | Newcastle | Christopher Wood | Venetia William’s handicapper has long shaped as though a thorough test of stamina should suit ideally, and this marathon trip on testing ground promises to unlock plenty more improvement (ran well over 3m7f at Musselburgh earlier in the month). He is a sound jumper who keeps finding for pressure, and plenty of these mainly northern sluggards have a lot to prove at the moment. |
2:27 | Kempton | Blow Your Wad | Tom Lacey’s scopey novice has already shown in December that this course and distance suited him, and he had excuses for a lesser effort behind the prolific frontrunner Ginnys Destiny at Cheltenham last time out. He remains open to more improvement after just three runs over fences, and this does look a pretty weak Grade 2 for the money on offer, with regular rider Stan Sheppard back in the plate. |
2:45 | Southwell | Diligent Harry | Clive Cox’s classy sprinter bounced back to his best form when winning last time at Lingfield, enhancing a brilliant career record on all-weather surfaces (6 wins from 10 starts away from the turf). The yard has been in terrific form with a small team over the winter months, and he can swoop late under John Fahy if seeing any daylight in the closing stages. |
3:00 | Kempton | Secret Squirrel | “Hughie Morrison’s improving novice looked quirky when denied on the nod at Taunton earlier in the month, but that is very strong form (pair trapped clear up the short straight) and his turn of foot should be a potent asset round here on relatively decent ground for the time of year. |
3:20 | Southwell | Lord North | John and Thady Gosden’s globetrotting 8-y-o is far classier than these rivals, winning 10 of his 20 career starts so far, and can land this prestigious Group 3 prize under regular rider Rab Havlin. He has been absent since March 2023 at Meydan, but has an excellent record fresh and seems sure to be fully fit. |
3:37 | Kempton | Forward Plan | Anthony Honeyball’s stayer has run to a consistent level in victory and defeat all winter, and looks the one to side with in this valuable premier handicap at Kempton on Saturday. He has won 3 from 8 over fences so far, and looked a shade unlucky not to reel in the enterprisingly ridden Annual Invictus at Doncaster in January. |
