Today’s Racing Tips – August 12th

Something for all flat racing fans on ITV on Saturday, with 9 competitive and valuable races covered live from 1.35pm. The controversial Shergar Cup divides opinion among punters, with the team format rather jarring against the true nature of racing, but there is no doubt it produces some very trappy handicaps and open betting heats in front of a huge family crowd. Over at Haydock, the Group 3 Rose of Lancaster looks a high quality contest at 3.00pm, with ground conditions drying out considerably in the last few days.

Karl Burke has his team in blistering form at the moment, with eight winners in the last fortnight, and his useful new arrival from Roger Varian can make a winning start for this excellent yard. The step back up in trip to 1m2f should suit ideally under Clifford Lee, and he shaped really well at Goodwood in May behind King of Conquest (can reverse that form with a more positive ride).

Charlie Appleby’s juvenile looked one to follow up in class when winning over this course and distance last month, landing hefty market confidence in style by four lengths with Buick hardly having to get serious. She remains open to plenty more improvement after two career starts, and this Group 3 does not look the strongest in terms of depth.

1:35	Ascot	Bond Chairman	Bryan Smart’s sprinter shaped really well over this course and distance last time out (up on a fast pace throughout and just wilting out of second inside the final furlong), and remains fresher than most after just two runs so far this season.
2:10	Ascot	Prydwen	George Scott’s stayer has five wins under his belt, and has been running well in defeat all summer in decent handicaps. This step up to two miles for the first time promises to suit, and he certainly caught the eye finishing strongly over 1m6f at Newmarket last time out.
2:25	Haydock	Fantastic Fox	The booking of Andrea Atzeni catches the eye for Roger Varian’s useful but frustrating handicapper, and a more patient ride in this huge field can reap dividends from an attractive mark (on the back of an expensive losing run where he has often promised more than ge delivers off the bridle).
2:45	Ascot	Andaleep	Daniel and Claire Kubler do very well with a small team of horses, and this consistent handicapper has been running well in victory and defeat all season. He has optimum conditions at Ascot on Saturday, and seems sure to go close if enjoying any luck in running under his usual hold-up ride.

3:20	Ascot	Escobar	David O’Meara has his team firing in the winners in recent weeks in the north, and a rare southern raider can prove successful at Ascot in this competitive mile handicap. He always needs a fast pace and the cards to fall right from off the pace, but he has a good make up here with the rapidly drying turf much more suitable.

3:55	Ascot	Struth	Charlie Johnston’s tough sort has won 2 of his 9 career starts, and he caught the eye when a creditable third over this course and distance in July (easy to excuse deep ground form at Goodwood last time).
4:30	Ascot	Washington Heights	Kevin Ryan’s quirky sprinter has been running well all summer in defeat, and showed this new mark was within his compass with a creditable fourth of 16 at Newmarket in July. He remains with upside in handicaps after just ten career starts, and can pick these off late if enjoying a clean run through from off the pace.
