Saturday’s ITV racing coverage brings some top class turf action from Ascot and York, with a compelling mix of Group races and valuable Heritage handicaps setting punters a tough challenge. The King George VI at 3.40pm is very much the highlight on a compelling afternoon, with a top class field assembled and a chance to compare all the Group 1 formlines from the last few months (with the Epsom Derby rematch between Auguste Robin and King of Steel eagerly awaited).
In this article:
King Of Steel
York 3:40 (UK time)
Roger Varian’s 3-y-o outran his 66/1 price when finishing a cracking second to Auguste Robin in the Epsom Derby (arguably doing too much too soon and picked off), and showed that was no fluke with an authoritative win at a short price at the Royal meeting here. He remains with upside as he becomes more settled, and his turn of foot on decent ground should be a potent weapon under the excellent Kevin Stott.
Odds: NA
Random Harvest
Ascot 2:25 (UK time)
Ed Walker’s 5-y-o shaped really well in the face of an impossible task behind Nashwa at Newmarket last time out at Group 1 level, and this Group 3 for fillies and mares represents a much more realistic assignment. She ran really well from the front when second at the Royal meeting in June, and a positive ride from Saffie Osborne here could make her very hard to pass against the far rail.
Odds: NA

Time (UK) | Track | Horse | Analysis |
---|---|---|---|
1:50 | Ascot | Symbology | Clive Cox has a very strong hand in the juvenile division, and his scopey grey filly overcame clear signs of inexperience to make a winning debut at York earlier in the month. She now steps straight up into Group 3 company at Ascot on Saturday, but has plenty of potential to improve and can take the uplift in her stride under the red hot Rossa Ryan. |
2:05 | York | Sampers Seven | Mick Appleby’s sprinter has been hinting at returning to his best form from a falling mark in recent runs, and he can land this novelty contest under Charlie Hammond. |
2:25 | Ascot | Random Harvest | Ed Walker’s 5-y-o shaped really well in the face of an impossible task behind Nashwa at Newmarket last time out at Group 1 level, and this Group 3 for fillies and mares represents a much more realistic assignment. She ran really well from the front when second at the Royal meeting in June, and a positive ride from Saffie Osborne here could make her very hard to pass against the far rail. |
2:40 | York | Lethal Levi | Karl Burke’s sprinter has been knocking loudly on the door in warm company in recent weeks, and arguably did too much too soon when just denied close home at Newcastle last time out. He will relish the flat six furlongs here on eased decent ground, and a more patient ride from Clifford Lee can see him cut these down late. |
3:00 | Ascot | Biggles | Ralph Beckett’s handicapper is thought at home to be a lot better than his mark, and he justified that confidence with an impressive win at Newmarket earlier in the month over this 7f trip on eased ground. He remains with upside on the turf after just ten career starts, and a strong pace seems assured in a big field which should help him see things out under Ryan Moore (can take a keen grip in the early stages). |
3:15 | York | My Prospero | William Haggas has a brilliant record on the Knavesmire, and his smart performer has shaped better than the bare result on both starts so far this summer. He will find this a good deal easier than when finishing fourth at Royal Ascot in June, and a more positive ride is on the cards here from Tom Marquand (very much a galloper rather than one with an explosive turn of foot). |
03:40 | Ascot | King Of Steel | Roger Varian’s 3-y-o outran his 66/1 price when finishing a cracking second to Auguste Robin in the Epsom Derby (arguably doing too much too soon and picked off), and showed that was no fluke with an authoritative win at a short price at the Royal meeting here. He remains with upside as he becomes more settled, and his turn of foot on decent ground should be a potent weapon under the excellent Kevin Stott. |
