Today’s Racing Tips – February 18th

There are 7 meetings on ITV on Saturday, with the cameras picking out the best of the graded action from Ascot, Haydock and Wicanton. Cheltenham festival clues should be easy to find, with all of the top UK yards sure to be well represented (as long as the ground conditions do not quicken up too much in the week before). Shiskin bids to get his faltering career back on track in the Grade 1 Betfair Chase, but it will be a brave punter who takes a short price about him after two very poor runs in the last 11 months (physical issues the likely reason).

Millers Bank

Ascot 3:35 (UK time)

Alex Hales stable star might lack the hype or profile of a couple of these rivals at the head of the market, but he is battle-hardened and reliable and makes plenty of appeal at the current prices. A positive front-running ride from Jonathan Burke on drying ground could make him very hard to pass up the straight, with his attitude under pressure likely to count for plenty if he is able to dictate matters unpestered on the lead.

Odds: NA

1:50AscotBold EndevourNicky Henderson has a typically terrific team of young horses in his yard this winter, and his progressive chaser is fancied to continue his upwardly mobile profile upped into Grade 2 company at Ascot on Saturday. He impressed with his jumping under a confident ride at Doncaster last month, and there remains plenty of scope to keep improving over fences through the spring months ahead.
2:05HaydockErne RiverNick Kent’s useful performer has run with credit in warm company already this season over hurdles and fences, and he should appreciate the decent ground conditions expected at Haydock on Saturday. He is a strong traveller who is a model of consistency for regular rider Charlie Hammond, and remains with a bit of potential after just nine career starts under Rules.
2:25AscotRevels HillHarry Fry’s useful performer has run with credit in warm company already this season, and he should appreciate the rapidly quickening ground conditions expected at Ascot on Saturday. He remains with upside after just seven runs over fences, and a positive ride from Jonathan Burke back in trip to three miles should hard to pass up the straight.
2:40HaydockNotachanceAlan King has emerged from a quiet spell during the “big freeze” in recent weeks, and this useful chaser should be fresh and well after just two visits to the track so far this winter. An extreme test of stamina suits ideally on decent ground (creditable third over 3m5f at Warwick last time out), and the booking of the excellent Tom Cannon certainly increases confidence.
3:00AscotIrish HillPaul Nicholls has a fantastic record in these competitive handicaps, and his progressive performer has really thrived in recent months. He now has a career high handicap mark to defy after a prolific spell, but he did well to win at Fakenham last time and there is more to come after just nine runs over timber.

3:42WincantonFirst StreetNicky Henderson’s classy hurdler has graduated up from handicap company this season, and he should relish there emphasis on speed round this sharp right handed track on the expected fast ground.
