There are four meetings in Britain and Ireland on Friday, with fair quality jumps action from Kelso sure to attract most of the betting activity. Dundalk, Lingfield and Southwell stage modest all-weather cards, with low grade handicaps very much the order of the day, and the floodlights coming on at 5.15pm at the latter meeting. The intended meeting at Fakenham was abandoned earlier in the week due to “hard ground”, something which is becoming a real issue for jumping trainers as the festival looms on the horizon.

Dan Skelton’s novice showed terrific resolution to edge out a stablemate at Southwell last time out, and remains open to plenty of improvement after just two runs over hurdles. The decent ground expected at Kelso on Friday should suit ideally, and a positive ride from the front is on the cards from Harry Skelton now dropping back four furlongs in trip to a bare two miles.

Donald McCain’s handicapper had been running really well in defeat all winter until struggling in a hot Cheltenham contest in January, and this represents a step down in class with Brian Hughes back in the saddle. His four wins over hurdles have all come when the ground conditions have ridden “good to soft” or quicker, and the recent dry spell means things are very much in his favour at Kelso on Friday.
