Jack Wright is back in the Bundesliga with a Union Berlin vs Borussia Dortmund prediction, team news, lineups and fixtures preview ahead of the weekend.
Our Union Berlin vs Borussia Dortmund prediction is for Borussia Dortmund to win the match 1-2.
In this article:
Germany, Bundesliga, Saturday, March 2nd, 14:30 (UK)
Union squandered a great chance to put some breathing space between themselves and the relegation zone last weekend. Recovering from conceding an early opener to lead Heidenheim 2-1 at the break before allowing an equaliser with 20 minutes remaining.
The Eisernen have shown great improvement under Nenad Bjelica, underpinned by excellent home form. Saturday’s draw saw the first points dropped at Stadion An der Alten Försterei since the Croatian’s arrival at the club.
Victories over Monchengladbach, Koln, Darmstadt and Wolfsburg, the latter three all “to-nil”, will give the Iron plenty of confidence they can upset this Dortmund side, especially with Edin Terzić’s men having their 10-game unbeaten run ended by Hoffenheim at the weekend.
As ever, when an underdog looks to topple one of the bigger sides in the division, set pieces can make all the difference. In the 6ft 3-inch centre back, Danilho Doekhi, Union have a real threat in the opposition box.
The 25-year-old has two league goals to his name this term, bringing his total to an impressive seven in 38 games since joining the club from Vitesse. His most recent strike came in the 1-0 home win against Wolfsburg when he thundered in a header from a corner.
The Dutch defender had three unsuccessful attempts in the 2-2 draw with Heidenheim, meaning he has now had at least one shot in each of his last four home appearances in the German topflight. The odds of 2.00 for at least one shot here look a little too big to ignore.
Union Berlin vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction odds via bet365 as at 09:00, February 28th February, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Dortmund’s Donyell Malen and Union Berlin’s Robin Gosens will both miss the game through yellow card suspensions – Gosens is Union’s top scorer this Bundesliga season with six goals, Malen is Dortmund’s second-best scorer with 10 goals behind Niclas Füllkrug (11).
Last time out against Hoffenheim, Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus collected his 91st and 92nd assist in the Bundesliga, drawing level with Franck Ribéry – since detailed data collection began in 2004-05, only Bayern’s Thomas Müller has assisted more goals in the Bundesliga (167). Reus collected the first of his three assists of this Bundesliga season in the 4-2 win over Union Berlin in the reverse fixture.
