We bring you our Stuttgart vs Mainz prediction, team news, standings and lineups preview in the Bundesliga courtesy of Scott Thornton. Stuttgart are looking to make it three wins in a row as they continue along the road to Champions League football. There are several sides in hot pursuit so there can be no room for complacency when they take on a Mainz side that are struggling. Stuttgart ran out 3-1 winners when these sides met earlier this season.

Stuttgart were in danger of dropping out of the top four a few weeks ago. However, big wins over RB Leipzig and Freiburg have consolidated their position. There is now a four-point cushion between themselves and the Europa League places. Sebastian Hoeneß’s side narrowly avoided relegation last season, so few could have predicted the level of progress we have seen in this campaign.
The home side has been exceptional at the MHPArena, so the first of our Stuttgart vs Mainz bets is for them to win by at least two goals. Bet365 have this bet priced at 2.01 on the -1.0.1.5 Asian handicap market. Stuttgart have won eight of their ten home matches in the league, averaging 3.2 more goals than their opponents over that period.
Mainz are still searching for their first away win of the season. They have struggled to create meaningful chances on the road and are averaging just 0.8 goals per away game as a result. Jan Siewert’s side is facing one of the division’s most lethal attacks, so the signs are ominous.

Our next tip for Stuttgart vs Mainz is for Stuttgart to win and keep a clean sheet in the match. Their attack, spearheaded by Serhou Guirassy, has grabbed the headlines this season, but the defence has also been key. They are conceding the 4th fewest goals in the Bundesliga, and their opponents have the 3rd lowest xG with 1.06 per game.
Stuttgart’s home defensive record makes for even better reading. They are conceding an average of just 0.9 goals per game across their 10 Bundesliga matches in front of their own fans. Five of those matches have come against sides currently in the bottom half of the table; they have kept clean sheets in three of those.
Goals have been a problem for Mainz. They have the 2nd lowest xG and have scored the 2nd fewest goals in the German top flight. They managed zero shots on target in their last away match against Eintracht Frankfurt, who are nine points behind Stuttgart.

The one-way traffic continues in our third and final pick for this clash. We are backing Deniz Undav to score any time in the match. Undav has really stepped up in recent weeks. He followed up a memorable hat-trick against RB Leipzig with a goal and two assists away in Freiburg last weekend. He looks set to have a field day against this poor Mainz side.
Serhou Guirassy has snatched the headlines in the Stuttgart attack this season. The striker kept pace with Harry Kane in the race for the Golden Boot in the early months of the season but has been away at the African Cup of Nations. Undav has been impressive all season but has really stepped up in Guirassy’s absence.
The former Leicester forward has scored 13 league goals in the Bundesliga, the 4th most in the division. He is averaging 2.1 shots on target per 90 minutes played, which has translated to a goal every 90 minutes.
Stuttgart vs Mainz Predictions odds via bet365 as at 14:04, February 5th, 2024. Odds may now differ.
Keeping players fit will be crucial for Stuttgart from now until the end of the season. Serhou Guirassy is likely to be available again and will add to an attack that has looked menacing in recent weeks. The only long-term injury is Dan-Axel Zagadou, who has torn his ligaments.
Mainz is likely to be without Jung-Sung Lee in the starting lineup, who is on international duty. Centre-backs Stefan Bell and Andreas Hanche-Olsen will also miss the trip to Stuttgart. We could well see an unchanged 11 for the visitors.
Stuttgart possible starting lineup:
Nubel; Roualt, Anton, Stergiou, Mittlestadt, Vagnoman; Stiller, Karazor; Fuhrich, Undav, Guirassy
Mainz possible starting lineup:
Zentner; Widmer, Van Den Berg, Caci, Mwene; Barreriro, Krauß, Onisiwo, Amiri, Burkardt; Ngankam
